UFCW Union Members Protest the Firing of Union Rep Clemente Velasco
A group of about 40 to 50 union members from UFCW 271, gathered in front of their union local on Thursday afternoon, to protest the firing of their union rep, Clemente Velasco. Mr. Velasco had been their only Spanish-speaking union rep for the past 9 years, and most of those protesting, including about 80% of the union membership in Omaha, is Latino. In an interview with Mr. Velasco, he stated that he was told by UFCW President, Brian Schwisow, that he was being fired “for the benefit of the local union.” Velasco believes that the real reason is that Schwisow wanted him out to remove him as a potential presidential opponent in the next election. “He told one of the other office workers that he was firing me because I didn’t tell him I was taking two days of sick leave before I took my 2 weeks vacation. The truth is, I called him before I took my sick leave and he said ‘fine,’ ok.” When Velasco returned from vacation, Schwisow called him |
